Alfred Baines

 

Artificer Engineer

 

Born: 1878 or 1889, Barrow-in-Furness

 

Died: c1925

 

BAINES, Alfred - was born in 1887 or 1889 and was from Barrow-in-Furness where the EARL GREY was built. He trained
(apprentice) at Vickers to be a marine engineer.

 

He sailed with the Earl Grey to Canada, where he was later joined by his wife Sarah Agnes (née Pearson).  Their son Alfred Pearson and daughter Mary Kathleen were born in Charlottetown, PEI. It is believed they had 2 other daughters who died at a young age.

 

When EARL GREY was sold to Russia, Alfred went over as part of the crew and was retained their for 6 months. His family returned to England c1915-1916. Sarah returned to Canada but later returned to England permanently.

 

After the war Alfred worked for White Star Lines which included trips to the Adriatic, and later Boeing in Seattle, Washington.

 

Alfred died at the age of 38 years (c1925) from meningitis.
