In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MASKERINE, William Joseph (Bill) - Bill Maskerine, at the age of 97, passed away at Princess Court, Dryden on March 5, 2021. His cherished wife of 71 years, Dorothy, at his side. A loving father to Bernie and daughter-in-law Pat, grandchildren Nathan (Lindsay) and Courtney (Denis) and great grandchildren, Alex, William, Sam and Eleanor. Bill was predeceased by his parents and five brothers.
Bill lived his entire life in his favourite community, Sioux Lookout. He was a dedicated volunteer: refereeing hockey, fireman and Chief of the SL Fire Department, Rotary President, active Legionnaire, member of the Sacred Heart Choir, first aid instructor and ambulance attendant. Bill was beside himself with excitement when he was able to bring the first ambulance to town and start the volunteer ambulance brigade. He and Dorothy delivered meals on wheels well into their eighties. He was proud of his community and the level of care and volunteerism that existed.
Bill was involved in many enterprises and businesses throughout his working career, but the common thread in all was the opportunity to stay in his home town. He thoroughly enjoyed splitting wood, picking blueberries and fishing at his favourite “holes”. He had a special place in his heart for all children and his dogs. Coffee downtown in the afternoon was alright too. In his words, it was a “pretty good life”.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private service was held for family and friends at the Sacred Heart Church on Friday March 12, 2021 for 1:00 p.m. with Father Stephen Chilaka in Sioux Lookout, Ontario.
A special thanks to the staff(s) at Meno Ya Win Health Centre, William George Extended Care and Princess Court Long Term Care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bills’ memory to The Royal Canadian Legion branch 78, Edwin Switzer Memorial. (The Sioux Lookout Bulletin 16 Mar 2021)
