Arthur James Orr

Arthur J. Orr, Naval Hero, Dies - 80, of Halifax, was buried in Gate of Heaven cemetery, following funeral service. He died Feb. 6 in Camp Hill Hospital. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he served his apprenticeship to become a marine engineer. In 1916, he was commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy and soon after, survived a battle that sank, both his ship and a German raider. Between the two world wars, he served with the Royal Mail Lines and later with Canadian National Steamships. In the Second World War, he was senior engineer aboard HMCS PRINCE ROBERT when it captured a German ship off Mexico, the first recorded prize of war for the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war, he returned to the merchant marine and retired from Saguenay Terminals in 1957. Surviving are a son, Lt-Cmdr. Thomas Orr, Halifax, and a brother, Frederick, Calgary.
