In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
JONES, Gordon Lawrence - Gord was born a twin son in Toronto of Herbert Cecil Jones and Florilla Hannah Ruth Crofoot, a wanderlust from Day One. His love for travel culminated in the most exciting trip of his life, a nonstop flight right into the arms of Jesus, his Saviour and Lord on July 10th, 2021. He graduated from Humberside Collegiate in Toronto, McMaster University in Hamilton, Hamilton Teachers' College, Hamilton and lastly State University of Buffalo, NY with a Master of Science (Education) degree majoring in Geography. God brought Gordon and Doreen Dyment of Smithville together in Sep. 1958 at Hamilton Teachers' College and they were married on April 16th. 1960. After 4 years of teaching in Toronto they contracted to teach for the Chiquita Banana Company in Costa Rica and extended that to 3 years. Eldest daughter, Linda was born in 1965 in Hamilton and returned with Gord and Doreen to Costa Rica for the final teaching year there and twin daughters Karen and Susan were born after their return to Niagara Falls in 1967, known as their Centennial Project. In High School years Gord became a Queen Scout and after High School joined the University Naval Training Division as an Officer Cadet. Gord hitchhiked to Mexico and Cuba in his early years and as a result picked up a keen interest in Spanish which lasted his whole life. His teaching assignments were all in Niagara Falls beginning with Princess Margaret Sr. Elementary School, N.F.C.V.I., A. N. Myer Secondary School, and finally retired from Westlane Secondary School in June 1992. In Gord's 29 years of retirement he enjoyed many activities, became a licensed Tour Guide for Bus Trips to Canada, drove cars to and from Florida for Snowbirds, and did a stint as a nighttime security guard. He was an avid Crossword Puzzle fan, developed a great love for gardening, collected 3500 Licences Plates and 2500 Piano Rolls to use with the family Player Piano. His creative side had him buying antique radios to fix up for sale or give away and also buying and remaking antique lamps. Gord was an expert on the Harmonica, playing for church events and just for fun with the family, and was also in the Barbershop Quartette for many years. He loved the Florida Flea Markets and was a regular during the 6 winters he and Doreen stayed in Daytona Beach Shores. Trips to the dump and the junkyard were excursions for him. Life for Gord was one big, exciting event. His godly love for people made him stand out and his encouragement of others blessed many along his way. In Dec 2012, Gord was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. Overall, he was an all-round guy who will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know him. Gord is predeceased by his parents and his twin brother Lloyd (the late Willa), of Thunder Bay in 2019.
