FITZGERALD, Bernard Michael (Bernie) - a resident of Aylesford, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021 at the age of 77. Bernie died suddenly but peacefully at the Valley Regional Hospital with his beloved wife Lillian and their children by his side. Bernard was born in Bell Island, NFLD on January 20, 1944, to Ronald and Bridget (Galway) Fitzgerald. He was the oldest of seven children. Bernie was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. He had the best sense of humour and everyone who knew him loved and respected him. Joining the military at the early age of 17, Bernie had many great adventures. He started his career in the R.C.N. and then retired from the military after 53 years of service. Bernie enjoyed wood working. In his younger years, he could be found at the hobby shop on the Base in Greenwood, creating many beautiful pieces for his wife and family. Bernard was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kathleen Mary Francis; his parents; and his brothers, David, Ronald "Ron" and Francis "Frank". He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian (Wheten); son, Bernard Michael Jr., Kentville; daughter, Karen Lynne (Joseph) Heukshorst; Milford Station; grandchildren, Grace "Gracie", Autumn "Audie", Joseph "Joey", Martin "Marty", and Kara "Pinky" Heukshorst; sisters, Eileen, Agnes "Aggie" and Karen "Bobby"; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the VRH, the VON, EMS, Homecare Angels and Annapolis Valley Homecare for their support and care. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua’s Catholic Parish, Berwick, Father John MacPherson officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. A video webcast of the funeral mass will be available on Friday, July 23 at 11:00 a.m. Donations in memory may be made to Lung Association.
