KNIGHT, Herbert (Bud) - of St. Thomas and formerly of Aylmer passed away at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Sunday, July 31, 2016 in his 88th year. Beloved husband of Betty (Lang) Knight. Dear father of Michael Knight(Cindy) of Aylmer, Marianne Lovell of Aylmer and Patrick Knight(Vienna) of Victoria B.C. Loving grandfather of Kevin, Kristi(Darrin), Katie(Nathan), Jaimie, Nicole(Larry), James, Matilda, Duncan, Elmer, Robyn and Conrad. Great-grandfather of Bryanna, Ashley, Emily and Thomas. Great-great grandfather of Kailynn. Born in Sault Ste. Marie on August 8, 1929, son of the late Albert and Rose (Ashmore) Knight. survived by brother Jack(Janet), a sister-in-law Bea and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers George and Earl.
Bud was the second of 3 generations of police officers spanning 99 years of policing service in Ontario. He served 34 years, including 13 years with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, and 21 years as a permanent Instructor at the Ontario Police College (OPC). His expertise included liquor laws, Young Offenders Act and Criminal Investigation.
Bud was instrumental in helping to form the Committee of Youth Officers and was honoured to have their annual provincial award of excellence named after him; "Bud Knight Award".
He was a member of Malahide Masonic Lodge 140, the Aylmer Optimist Club and Tillsonburg and St. Thomas Shrine Clubs. Bud served in the Royal Canadian Navy.
Friends may call at the H. A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer on Monday 7-9 p.m. Masonic Service Monday at 6:45 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 1:30 pm. Cremation will follow. Burial, Queen of Peace Cemetery. Donations to the Cancer Society would be appreciated.
