In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CROCKET, Harold Curwin (Curley) - Age 89 passed peacefully on Saturday, September 25, 2021. Born June 3, 1932 in Campbellton, N.B., to the late Harold and Sally (Curwin) Crocket. Predeceased by "his sweetness" wife of 68 years Peg; and eldest son, Kenneth, who welcomed him at his stop, along with many beloved family and close friends. Curley in younger years was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed both pursuits of hunting and fishing. He cultivated many lifelong friendships that both the Skipper and the Warden enjoyed years of camaraderie with, especially the infamous North Shore Pig Outs. And though adding many friends along life's journey, without a doubt his first and longest best friend was that of his brother, Jim (Frances) who he and Peg spent many special years bringing up their families together. Curley was known to all for his stubbornness, sharp wit and love of storytelling, all traits that served him well in his 34-year career in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring as CPO2 in 1983. Upon which the commencement of his second love began, the building of his beloved camp, Broad Arrow; a haven to his family and a place where lake neighbours also became fast friends. His presence will always be felt in Sally's Room. Left to miss his earthly presence are beloved daughter, Heather; son, Keith; and daughter-in-law Tina. All, along with grandson Shawn, helped afford the Skipper's wishes to remain living on his own these past couple years with their daily care, love and support. The family also wishes to thank a special homecare worker, Dora for her many kindnesses to Curley. Poppie will be remembered fondly by his grandchildren, Shawn (Tammy), Natasha (Danny), Andrew (Lindsay), Crystal (Shane), Gregory (Emily) and Candis (Evan); along with his great-grandchildren, Madison, Makayla, Makenzee, Maria, Aidan, Curwin and Nevan, they will cherish their times spent together at Broad Arrow and Poppie's ice-cream runs! The family have many humorous log entries to bring them comfort for years to come. Curley was blessed still with beautiful great-granddaughters, Holly and Sparrowe along with great-great granddaughter Emmrie, all brought a smile to his days. It is said that he cheated death several times in his 89 years, most notably being a survivor of the Royal Canadian Navy's worst peacetime disaster, the HMCS Kootenay explosion of 1969; also surviving a horrific motor vehicle accident in 1979. His family is ever grateful that those weren't "his stop" and for the extended years of his love, lessons and stories. Equating life to a bus ride Curley believed that when it was your time to get off the bus, it was your time, you don't get to choose your stop, it chooses you. What an amazing ride he had. A private service for family will be held in Oakridge Memorial Gardens on Monday, October 4th, 1300 hrs. Rest easy, sailor." There's no life like it" (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 29 Sep 2021)
