In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
REID, Alfred Jr. (Alfie) - aged 89 years of Millville, New Brunswick passed away on February 4, 2015 at the Veterans Health Unit, Fredericton, N.B., after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on April 2,1925, Alfie immigrated to Canada with his parents, Lena (née Harvey) and Alfred Reid Sr. in 1927 along with his older brother, Raymond.
Survived by his loving wife Anna (nee MacDonald) currently residing at Nashwaak Villa in Stanley, N.B.; daughters Teresa Brown (George), Millville, N.B. and Penny Reid (Paul), Oakville, ON.; daughter-in-law Darlene Reid (Peter Clay), Millville, NB; Anna’s son Duane MacDonald (Joyce), Temperance Vale, N.B.; a sister Marina Hull (Norman), Millville, N.B.; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and many Irish cousins around the world.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy Reid (nee Jones); a son Mack; brothers Raymond, Eric, Ronald and Gerald, and a sister Anna.
Alfie was an electrician by training and ran his own business, Reid’s Electrical Contracting, for many years. He also owned and ran other businesses in Millville including Reid’s General Store and Reid’s Apartments. He served his country as a young man during WWII with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. Alfie was an avid reader and collector throughout his life. He was also a life member of Millville Legion Branch 59, a member of the Shrine and Masonic Lodge, and served on the first village council for Millville. He and Anna supported the village with their time and donations in various ways over the years.
The family will receive visitors at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic, NB on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A RCL Tribute service will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7 pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 2 pm from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Blinn officiating. A reception will be held at the funeral home immediately following the service. All are welcome. Pallbearers will be Alfie’s nephews Thomas Reid, Mike Reid, Clifton Reid, Ricky Reid and grandsons Shawn Reid, Jason Brown and Whalen Brown. Interment will be later at Hawkins Corner Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Louise Breau Memorial Medical Trust Fund, the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick or the Veteran's Health Unit (Bus Fund). The family would like to offer sincere thanks to the staff at the Veteran’s Health Unit who took such wonderful care of Alfie and were so kind and supportive of Anna over these last seven years.
