Angus Millin (Scrib) Scribbans

Sergeant, Air Frame Technician, RCN / C.A.F.

Born: 19 Jan 1933, Saint John, New Brunswick

Died: 16 Jun 2022, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

SCRIBBANS, Angus Millin - age 89, of Cole Harbour, passed away June 16, 2022, at the Dartmouth General Hospital, Dartmouth, NS.

Born in Saint John, NB, he was the son of Walter W. and Bertha (Knox) Scribbans.

Angus “Scrib” was an Air Frame Tech with the Royal Canadian Navy and worked aboard both the HMCS Magnificent “Maggie” and the HMCS Bonaventure “Bonnie”. He went on to detachments onboard several other destroyer escorts, before retiring after 31 years as a Sergeant in the now merged Canadian Armed Forces. Over the years, he got to visit countries throughout Europe, Northern Africa and the Caribbean, but always preferred to be home. He enjoyed the opportunity to work with personnel from other countries and would often bring home crews from visiting fleets to meet his family and have backyard barbecues, giving them a chance to enjoy some home comforts away from their ships. Friendships made during those days remain to the present. On retirement from the Forces he worked a further 10 years at the WO and Sgt’s Mess at Shearwater, before hanging up his bar towel for good.

During his early days in the Navy, he was detached to Debert, NS, where he met Joan, the girl who would become his wife, and whom he adored for the rest of his life. For the past several years, he had become fast friends with a wonderful group of gentlemen, who came together each morning over coffee, jokes and a shared love of Angus’ impromptu catering – cakes, cookies, salmon canapes and Solomon Gundy showed up on a fairly regular basis. And he would never let his girls go home empty handed – whether it be a bag of Cheezies, some homemade Beef Jerky, or a full meal for supper.

Angus is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Joan D. (Cummings), Dartmouth; daughters Monica, Cole Harbour, Melissa (Robert Walker), Lawrencetown, and, Jennifer (Dave Hiscock), Eastern Passage; grandchildren, Nicholas Walker (Andree), Olivia Walker, Johnathan (Patricia) Hiscock and Jessica Hiscock; great-granddaughters Ava Walker and Clara Hiscock; sister Shirley O’Neil (Saint John, NB); and several nieces and nephews across Canada.

He was predeceased by his son Matthew; parents Walter and Bertha; brothers Walter and William; sisters Willa, May and Carolyn.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth Chapel), 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 24, 2022, in the Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel.
