In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PERRY, Herbert Earnest (Herb) - Age 93, passed away in Comox Valley Seniors Village, Comox, BC 15 September 2021. The family of Herbert Perry regrets to announce his passing, following a brief illness, at the age of 93. The son of James and Freda Perry, Herb was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, but moved to NS at a young age. Herb grew up in the River Hebert, Pugwash area but also spent time in Springhill, NS. At the age of 18 he heard the calling of the sea (or perhaps it was the free daily rum ration) and enlisted in the RCN as a steward. After a short stint as a steward, Herb transferred to the RCAF as an Air Defence Technician where he enjoyed postings to numerous radar stations across the country, including Mont Apica, QC, Beaverbank, NS, Sydney, NS and Falconbridge, ON and one out-of-country posting to McChord AFB in Washington State. Following his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces, Herb moved to Nanaimo, BC where he attended Malaspina College and became a certified chef. He worked at many restaurants in Nanaimo, including Nanaimo Harbour Lights (NHL) and the Malaspina Hotel. After several years in Nanaimo he moved to Holden, Alberta where he and his wife Leta operated a small restaurant. After a few years they returned to Nanaimo to enjoy full retirement. The call of the Maritimes was too hard to ignore though and they moved back to Springhill to reunite with family and friends they had grown up with. Herb enjoyed current events and country music and loved to get together with friends. He was pre-deceased by his wife Leta in 2006, his daughter Betty and son Ron. He is survived by his daughter Barbara, son Bryan (Roseann), daughter-in-law Beth, brothers Raymond and James (Carol) as well as numerous grandsons. Special mention should be made of the staff at Comox Valley Seniors Village who took such excellent care of Herb in his final years. Following cremation Herb will be laid to rest in Parrsboro alongside his wife Leta at a date to be determined. Herb chose MacDiarmid's Funeral Home, Oxford, to manage his funeral arrangements.
