MacLAUGHLIN, Robert John - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Robert John MacLaughlin born February 24, 1933. Bob died in his sleep on April 1, 2012. He is survived by his wife Ruth, daughter Bonnie and son-in-law Kris, granddaughters Indianna and Marley, brother-in-law Bob, and siblings; Bob was also a father to Debbie and loved by friends. He was rarely without his baseball hat and coffee. Bob grew up in Toronto; joined the Navy in 1952 as a Stoker. In his 22 years with the Navy, he served on both coasts and a number of ships including the CRUSADER, CEDARWOOD, ATHABASKAN, FRASER, JONQUIERE and the BONAVENTURE. In addition to other medals, he received the U.N.S.M. for the Korean War. He travelled the world and had many adventures. Bob was infamous for firing a canon, he and a fellow stoker made, interrupting Sunday services and imbedding a door into the hull of the ship. After retiring from the Navy, he moved to Calgary. He was a Maintenance Engineer at Carewest, a position he kept until he retired, due to stomach cancer. Against the odds he lived a further 16 years. He took care of Ruth, who suffers from a degenerative disease, and always baked cookies for his granddaughters. Bob's cremated remains will be buried at sea on April 14, 2012 with a wake to follow at the Fox and Hound Pub in Nanaimo. Donations to the Poppy Fund. (Calgary Herald 11 Apr 2012)
