Joyce Winter Matthews (née Jarvis)

Died: 19 Aug 2004, Invermere, British Columbia

 

MATTHEWS, Joyce Winter (née JARVIS) - died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at the Invermere Hospital at Invermere, B.C. on Thursday, August 19, 2004. She was born and grew up in Toronto and graduated from Margaret Eaton College in 1940. In 1942 she joined the WRCNS - retiring as Lieutenant WRCNS in November 1945. Joyce married Francis Richard (Dick) Matthews QC (then Pay Lieutenant) in November of 1945 in Vancouver, BC where they both served in the Canadian Navy. The two settled in Calgary where their three children were born. She was active in the Junior League of Calgary and participated in the formation of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Society in 1952. Her many years of service to that organization included service on the board and as President in 1976. Joyce was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She will be lovingly missed by her son Rick and his wife Janet of Dubai, UAE and Joyce's nephew Andrew Matthews of Calgary, her daughter Betsey Ryan of Palgrave, ON, and her son Michael and his wife Jane of Harrogate, B.C. She is survived by her brother John Jarvis and his wife June of Toronto. A Memorial Service in her honour will be held at Saint Phillips Church, 629 - 49 Avenue S.W., at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 23. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation, 205 - 8 Avenue S.E. will be greatly appreciated. (Calgary Herald 03 May 2012)
