Coder James Freure died at sea aboard HMS ICARUS from collapse of lungs during an operation for acute appendicitis. He was buried at sea on 26 Oct 1943.
Coder J.R. Freure Succumbs While Serving on Corvette - Word was received Thursday on the death of a Canadian sailor during an emergency operation for appendicitis on board a corvette somewhere in the Atlantic. The sailor was Coder James Ralph Freure, RCNVR, 22, who enlisted here in June 1942 and had been serving on a Canadian corvette for some time. He was to have been given a furlough on arrival back in Canada. Coder Freure was born in Wellandport, Ontario, and when he was eight years old the family moved to Hamilton, where he resided until he enlisted in the navy last year. He attended Delta Collegiate Institute and played on the rugby team there. He was manager of the senior basketball team at Delta Collegiate. According to the message received by his relatives from naval headquarters in Ottawa, Coder Freure was buried at sea. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Leah Freure, 607 Water Street, Peterborough, who has been an active member of the Peterborough Auxiliary to the navy since moving there last year; one sister, Mrs. John G. Adams, at the same address, and one brother, Thomas Russell Freure, London, Ont. His father, the late Samuel Freure died 15 years ago, and a sister Dorothy passed away eight years ago. Coder Freure was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and Sunday School in Hamilton. He worked at the Wallace Barnes plant before enlistment. (transcribed from article below)
