OTTAWAY, Eric Stone, Stoker 1c, V46481, RCNVR died - 24 Jul 1944, HMCS GIFFARD - son of Maurice and Hilda Ottawa of Hamilton, On.
Stoker 1st Class E. S. Ottaway lost his life in a swimming accident on the evening of July 24, 1944.
Stoker 1st Class Eric Stone Ottaway - a Memorial Service was held at the Church of Ascension on Sunday evening, for Stoker 1st Class Eric Stone Ottaway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Ottaway, 72 Young street. The Ven. Archdeacon W. F. Wallace conducted the service. Born in mount Hamilton, he had resided here all his life until his enlistment in the navy two years ago, when both he and his brother Clive entered the navy at the same time. He was a graduate of Hamilton Technical Institute, and a former employee of the Bennie Electric Company. He was an adherent of the Church of England. In a letter to Mrs. Ottaway, the commanding officer of a naval station overseas described the way in which he met his death. "He was on overnight leave and had gone swimming". Earnest efforts were made to save him without success. "He was buried on July 28, 1944 with full naval honours in the Service Cemetery near the base. A firing party fired volleys and officers and men attended.
Stoker Ottaway is buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland.
