McKAY, Gordon Ernest - It is with sad and heavy hearts that the family of Gordon (Gordie) Ernest McKay of Halifax, Nova Scotia, announce his passing with his step daughter and caregiver, Cathy Stephenson by his side, on December 22, 2021. Born on January 29, 1941 in Temiscaming, Quebec, Gordie was the son of the late Doris (Innes) McKay and the late Patrick McKay. Gordie was pre-deceased by his loving wife and best friend of 41 years, Doris Mae McKay. In addition to his wife, Gordie was pre-deceased by his mother Doris in 2008, his father Patrick in 1975, his brother Patrick, Jr. in 2010 and his sister Carole in 1971. Gordie is survived by his siblings Connie (Al) Last of Duncan, BC, Patricia (Rejean) LeSieur of Temiscaming, PQ, Colleen (Glen) Robinson of Kipawa, PQ, Michael of Langley, BC and Greg (Crystal) McKay of Fredericton, NB. In addition to his siblings, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews, his step-children Beth (Billy) Hawes, Cathy Stephenson, Donna (Brian) Brown and his step-grandchildren Robert Stephenson and William Hawes; great grand-children Sadie and Jordan Stephenson and his feline companion, Mr. Bob. Gordie lived of life of service to his country for 32 years. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in October 1958 and did his basic training in Cornwallis, NS. From there he served on both the east and west coasts on HMC Ships ST CROIX, CHAUDIERE, ASSINIBOINE, GATINEAU, RESTIGOUCHE, ANNAPOLIS and NIPIGON. He had land postings to Stadacona, Halifax and Esquimalt. One of the highlights of his career was serving on the Annapolis with his baby brother Greg who was 17 years his junior. After 32 years of service, he retired in 1990 and settled in Halifax where he enjoyed several executive positions with the Royal Canadian Legion, spending time at the cottage, having coffee with his buddies and reading. The family would like to express a sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital for their un-wavering care, support and love to Gordie in his final years. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will take place in the spring/summer of 2022 at which time Gordie and Doris will be joined in everlasting love. For those who wish, donations in memory of Gordie may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.  (Saltwire Network 28 Dec 2021)
