Stoker Jack R. Pettigrew, from Toronto, was with the R.C.N.V.R., has been killed on the war service overseas according to an announcement from Naval Headquarters yesterday. His mother, Mrs. Charles Bentley of 83 Sorauren Avenue, said yesterday that she had been informed of her son's death by Ottawa April 15, but that no details had been received yet. Born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow, 33 years ago, Stoker Pettigrew came to Canada twelve years ago with his family. Interested in sports, he had coached several hockey teams in the city. Unmarried, he joined the navy in August of last year and was on corvette duty with convoys, his mother said. No newcomer to ships, Stoker Pettigrew had been a machinist on lake vessels for six years. In addition to his mother, the Toronto sailor is survived by two sisters, Mrs. A. E. Fisher and Mrs. Masie McNulty, and two brothers, Archibald and David, all of Toronto.
Stoker Jack Pettigrew died on HMS TRILLIUM as a result of wounds suffered in an air attack on his ship. He is buried in the Sandwick Cemetery, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
Jack's brother Archibald Pettigrew served in the RCNVR and his brother David Pettigrew in the RCAF during the Second World War.
