In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
DUNHAM, Douglas Alvin - Doug passed away peacefully at the Penticton Regional Hospital on February 25, 2022. He was born in Hope and lived in Brookmere before coming to Penticton in the 1940's. In 1950, he joined the Canadian Navy, spending 25 years of service mostly in Shearwater, Nova Scotia. Doug's service included time on the ships, MAGNIFICENT and BONAVENTURE and were his proudest times as a member of the Canadian Naval Air Group. He returned to Penticton on his retirement and became a Commissionaire. He was a Shriner for many years, where he enjoyed the fellowship and its community involvement. Doug drove the 'Shriner's Cancer Van' until his failing vision would no longer permit and he turned to dispatching. He loved all sports and was very athletic being most successful with the Navy Volleyball team. He carried the love of this sport to 'civvy' life. A hobby he loved was working with wood, making clocks among other things. Doug leaves behind his devoted and loving wife of 67 years, France; his children: Joanne (Collen Popoff), Maxine and Matthew (Shaun); grandchildren: Kristy (Darren Scherger), Laura (Mark Calabrese), Josh, Ian Popoff (Daniela) and Kalli (Stuart Ballard); great grandchildren: Barrett and Wesson Scherger; siblings: Eillah (Charlie Hill), Reg (Debbie) and Pat (Gordon Howard); many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, among them, Tom and Marge Hammond, long time cruise and travel companions. Doug was very devoted to his family and although we are all extremely saddened by his passing, he will remain forever in our hearts. The family sends its sincerest thanks to the Doctors and dedicated staff at the Penticton Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Doug's memory to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. No service by request. (Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group 04 Mar 2022)
