In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CARRICK, Ronald Byrnes - passed away on January 10, 2022 in Alberta with his family. Ron was born in Winnipeg on April 18, 1935 and grew up in that city. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mildred Carrick, his loving wife Beverly Evelyn (Boal), his brother Jack Carrick and sister Mildred Mae Lundgren. Ron is survived by his son, Ronald Reginald, daughter-in-law Shauna and the light of his life, his four grandchildren, Carter Ronald, Liam Joseph, Aislin Joy and John Alexander. Ron is also survived by his nieces Linda Way and Kathleen Lundgren, his nephews Tom Carrick and David Lundgren, his sister-in-law Joyce Carrick and brother-in-law Bob Lundgren.
Ron was a standout track and basketball athlete at Norwood Collegiate for legendary Coach Mike Spack. Ron will also be remembered as a talented pianist. Self-taught and ear-trained, you could hum a tune; and Ron would play it back as if he had the music in front of him. He left a career as a professional musician to raise a family.
Ron was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Winnipeg. He served in the Navy reserves HMCS CHIPPAWA for many years. He was a Mason, Knights Templar and Shriner. Ron made his mark in the business world with Peek Freans biscuits and moved his family with the company to Calgary, where he would become General Manager for Western Canada. Ron held the same position with Ganong's Chocolates.
Philanthropy was never far from Ron's heart. Ron served as a Director of Rundle College Society from 1988 to 2019 and was Secretary of the Society and Chairman of the Board's Governance Committee from 2000 to 2018. Ron retired from the Rundle Board as Secretary Emeritus.
Ron's son, Reg, graduated from Rundle in 1992 and was the valedictorian of his class. Ron's greatest joy was in following his son across North America and watching him coach basketball at Brandon University, West Virginia Tech and Olds College.
A service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Winnipeg on January 21, 2022 at 11 a.m.; and a Celebration of Life will take place in Calgary at a time and place to be announced this spring. (the Calgary Herald 17 Jan 2022)
