GUY, Rex Geoffrey - passed away Sunday, October 15, 2006, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born and educated in England, he was a son of the late Commander Rex Guy and May Guy. He was a ship's officer in the British Merchant Service from 1942-49, including war service in convoys to and from the United States and Canada carrying aviation spirit, commercial alcohol and munitions to the Russian ports of Murmansk and Archangel. He emigrated to Canada in 1949 and served on Canadian National Steamships Canadian Observer, Canadian Constructor and Lady Rodney. He entered the Royal Canadian Navy in 1951. Rex served in many appointments afloat and ashore, including HMCS Portage, HMCS Griffon, HMS Dryad (for specialist navigation/operations qualification), HMC Ships SUSSEXVALE, ATHABASKAN, IROQUOIS, SIOUX, and in command, CRESCENT, FRASER, PROTECTEUR, OIC Navigation Training Centre, HMCS NADEN, ADC to MGEN GR Pearkes VC, Lt. Governor, British Columbia, Sea Training Staff Atlantic, Senior Staff Officer, Current Operations Maritime Command Headquarters, Chief of Staff Operations, Northern Region Command Headquarters, Yellowknife, N.W.T., Queen's Harbour Master, Halifax, Base Administration Officer, CFB Halifax, and Commandant, Canadian Forces Fleet School. Rex retired in 1983, with the rank of Captain. His naval service continued until 1993 in the part-time capacity as a Convoy Commodore, and he was responsible for Canada's Convoy Commodore organization and their training. Well-known in NATO Naval Control of Shipping circles, he was regarded as an authority on Naval Control of Shipping and Convoy Operations and authored major advances in convoy operational doctrine and communications procedure. He made presentations to Commons and Senate Committees on the GST, Commons Committees on HRD, Federal/Provincial CPP Hearings, Commons and Senate Committees on Bill C-78 and to the Nova Scotia Pricing and Review Board. He was a member of John Murphy M.P. Constituency Committee on HRD and Social Reform. He represented the FSNA to the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia as an advisor to the Senior Citizens Secretariat and played a major role in the production of the Nova Scotia Seniors Safe Driving Report as its chair and in its presentation to the Provincial Cabinet. He was past chair of the Group of NINE Advisory Committee of Nova Scotia and was a senior's representative on the Road Safety Advisory Committee of Nova Scotia. Rex was appointed to the Nova Scotia Provincial Planning Committee for the UN International Year of Older Persons and represented Nova Scotia at the founding meeting of the Canadian Co-ordinating Committee for IYOP. He represented the National Congress of Seniors at the United Nations World Assembly on Aging in Madrid, Spain. He was instrumental in having the National Congress of Seniors established made up of 12 organizations based on the Group of NINE Model in Nova Scotia. In 1984 he became active in the Federal Superannuates National Association as a result of threats to pensions and retirement benefits. He was president of the Orchard Valley Branch of FSNA from founding in 1984 until 1992. He was Regional Director for Nova Scotia and a member of the National Board of Directors from 1992 including chairman of various major committees and member of the national executive committee until 1998 when he became the National President of the Association until 2004, and remained active in the association as immediate past president until his death. Rex is survived by his wife, Phyllis "Liz" (Woodworth) Guy; daughters, Joanne (Chris) Espinel, Invermere, B.C.; grandsons, Nicolas, Vancouver, B.C.; David, Calgary, Alta.; Linda (Ronald) Thibault, grandsons, Michael and Jonathan, and granddaughter Laura, all of Halifax; Patricia (John) Tupper and granddaughters Emma, Kathryn and Olivia, all of Lower Sackville; Ashley and Stephanie (Andre) Sa and their daughter Daniela, all of Vancouver, B.C.; brothers, John (Shirley) Guy, Ottawa, Ont.; Bill Guy, Vancouver, B.C.; sister, Mary Guy, Ottawa, Ont.; various nephews and nieces. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 19, in the Stadacona Faith Centre, Gottingen Street, CFB Halifax, Chaplain Charles Black and Rev. Donald C. MacPherson officiating, with a reception to follow in the Ward Room, CFB Halifax. Interment in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville, at a later date. Family flowers only, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick.
