In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
GOODWIN, Alma (née KNIGHT) - of Red Deer, Alberta passed away in her 95th year on July 22, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband, Captain James R Goodwin in 1999 and her daughter, Terri Mayowski in 2012. She is survived by her brother Alex Knight, her children James (Dawna) Goodwin, Kala Goodwin and Martina Hyciek (Jean Perron), her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Alma was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, and served in the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) as a Cook from 1944 to 1946 on the East and West Coasts. She was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. Although she did not see active combat nor serve aboard ships at sea, she saw the horrors of war when the ships docked after weeks and months at sea. Throughout her life, she stayed true to her military roots and was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion in any city or town she lived. The many medals and pins that grace her blazer and beret reflect her service. As well, Alma was an active member of the Honour Guard in Red Deer and attended hundreds of funerals. She travelled to numerous WREN reunions all across Canada. Before she joined the Navy, Alma worked on the frigate HMCS Swansea, as a Shipwright’s Helper.
Alma met Jim and married him in 1950. They lived in northern communities such as Fort MacMurray, Fort Smith and Hay River NWT for 17 years. While living in remote Rocky Point she cared for and drove a team of sled dogs, which was the only mode of transport during the winter season. In 1961, Alma christened the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Eckaloo. She raised four children who greatly benefited from her cook’s training in the Navy. This was only enhanced by a natural affinity to prepare delicious food, and by her mother who taught her the fine art of French cooking. In the early 60’s Alma was presented with a picture of Mary holding Jesus. The picture had been blessed by Pope John XXIII, at a gathering of Clergy in Rome. The Bishop in Fort Smith asked the Pope to bless the picture for all Alma’s care and work with the underprivileged children in Fort MacMurray and Fort Smith. Other talents included a beautiful singing voice, and a green thumb. She had an independent spirit that took her on many travel adventures. She credited her long life to a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables.
Her spark and wit will be missed and Alma will be remembered fondly by many. Alma’s family and friends would like to thank the LPN’s and Care Partners at Points West who made her days brighter.
