In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry Medal: KERWIN, Michael Roderick, Able Seaman, V32313, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM), RCNVR, HMCS HAIDA - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 20 January 1945 and London Gazette of 14 November 1944. "During one action on 5th - 6th of August, a fierce fire broke out at 'Y' Gun in HMCS HAIDA as a result of the explosion of a cordite charge and the ignition of oil from the damaged hydraulic system. The fire was centred in right gun shield. Able Seaman Kerwin, although blinded and wounded by splinters, went into the blazing gun shield at great risk to his own life and dragged out an injured man to safety. Both were badly burned, but Able Seaman Kerwin's prompt and gallant action saved the life of his shipmate."
Michael Kerwin is buried in the Our Lady of the Visitation Roman Catholic Cemetery, South Gloucester, Ottawa Municipality, ON.
