CARTER, George Frederick, AB, V18016, RCNVR, died - 28 Mar 1942, HMCS COLUMBIA - Son of William John and Nina M. Carter, Whitby, ON; husband of Dorothy E. Carter, Halifax, NS.

 

Able Seaman G. F. Carter died at Halifax Harbour, Halifax, Nova Scotia from a bullet wound due to accidental discharge of a rifle. Able Seaman Carter was standing near the gangway of HMCS COLUMBIA, which was tied alongside jetty No. 4. In the course of some innocent scuffling, a loaded rifle was accidentally discharged, resulting in the death of Able Seaman Carter and the wounding of another seaman. He is buried in the St. John's Cemetery, Port Whitby, Ontario.
