COLE, John Alvah, ERA 3c, V35441, RCNVR, Died of Wounds - 21 Jul 1944, HMCS MATANE - Born 04 Oct 1914 son of William Garfield and Henrietta Emma (née Blohm) Cole of Toronto, Ontario; husband of Elinor E. Cole, of Stranraer, Saskatchewan.
Engine Room Artificer J. A. James Cole died as a result of injuries received aboard HMCS MATANE - he was severely scalded from the blast of the boiler and died the next day as a result.
ERA John Alvah Cole of Victoria, British Columbia, died July 21, 1944 of wounds received in action and is buried at Weston Mill cemetery, Plymouth, Devon, England. The MATANE was on anti-submarine patrol near Brest, France, when she was hit by a glider bomb, killing three seamen and severely wounding Cole. He was the son of William Garfield Cole of Toronto. John was born at Lindsay, Ontario, and was working as a machinist at Victoria Brass & Iron works when he enlisted on April 27, 1942 at Esquimalt British Columbia. He had completed a year at the University of Toronto and left a wife Elinor E. at Stranraer (she later remarried as Mrs. Knight of Vancouver).
