VARNEY, Douglas Charles, ERA 5c, V40240, RCNVR, MPK - 28 Jan 1944, HMCS MAHONE - Son of Charles Thomas Varney and Violet May Varney, of Toronto, Ontario.
ERA Varney died as a result of a collision between HMCS MAHONE and SS Fort Townsend at Sydney, Nova Scotia. His body was not recovered.
Engine Room Artifice Douglas Charles Varney age 20 the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Varney, Delaware Ave., is missing at sea according to the latest Royal Canadian Navy casualty list. He enlisted into the R.C.N.V.R. on November 04, 1941 and went on active service on May 01, 1942. He has been on duty as an Engine Room Artifice since last June. No details have been received by his parents. Joining the navy when he was 17, Varney was among the first group of boys to attend the naval training school at Galt. A year ago, after further training at Esquimalt he was posted to Halifax. He is a former student of McMurrich and Central Technical School. A sister, Doris is at home.
