In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CONRAD, Marshall Elton - 84, Lunenburg, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 28, 2004, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in First South, he was a son of the late Elton E. and Laura (Tanner) Conrad. A retired contractor, Marshall built many homes in the Lunenburg area. At the start of the Second World War, he worked a number of years in the Halifax Dockyard. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served his country until the end of the war. On returning home to Lunenburg, he joined his father in building many fine homes in and around the Lunenburg area. Having an adventurous heart, he took a few years away from the building industry and sailed the the CN ship, Lady Nelson to southern ports and the United States. He also spent some time going to sea and learning first hand about fishing with the new type draggers. After that he returned once more to Lunenburg and his contracting business. Married in 1943 to Elizabeth Crouse, their happy life together was suddenly saddened by the loss of their only child, David Marshall in a drowning accident with two of his friends in September, 1967. Although life was never to be the same without their beloved David, they carried on sharing their life and love and did many wonderful things together. In 1968, they moved to Newton, Mass., where he once again worked in the building industry, first with his brother-in-law, Warren Mosher and later he started his own business. They made many new friends and remained there until 1979. After returning to Lunenburg, he and Betty continued their travels together, going to Florida where they spent their winters in Venice and enjoyed many cruises to southern countries, enjoying another milestone in their life together. For the past few years, due to declining health, Marshall stayed close to home. He was a member of Central United Church, Lunenburg, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 23, Lunenburg and the Masonic Lodge. Marshall will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty; sisters, Phylis and her husband Warren Mosher, First South; Lucille Himmelman, Lunenburg; 15 nieces and nephews and their children. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. No. 3, Lunenburg, where a private family funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Rev. Robert Zinck officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. By request of the family their will be no visitation in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers or memorial donations in Marshall's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. (Sweeny Funeral Home)
