Merlin Weldon Riley

 

Air Electrical Technician, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

 

Born: 18 May 1940

 

Died: 24 Apr 2022, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

 

RILEY, Merlin Weldon - passed away peacefully on April 24th, 2022, at the age of 81, at the Bisset Court Nursing Home, Dartmouth with his wife and family by his side. Born May 13, 1940, Riley Road, Cherry Brook; he was the son of the late Osborne and Florence (Smith) Riley. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Joyce (Johnston), children Warren, Marcia (Christopher Winters) and Alanna (Silvio Lapierre), 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and godchildren Rodney Bundy and Renata Mulder-Grant. He was predeceased by children, Darrin and Joscelyn and sisters, Olive Riley and Eleanor Dugas.

 

Merlin joined the Royal Canadian Navy, now known as the Canadian Armed Services in 1960 as an Aircraft Electronics Technician. As a member of the Navy he travelled to England, Scotland, France, Germany, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and South American, just to name a few. He served aboard HMCS BONAVENTURE and PRESERVER. He spent 20 years with CFB Shearwater and 4 years in Summerside, Prince Edward Island as a member of 412 Search and Rescue Squadron. He retired from the Canadian Armed Services in 1985. Following his retirement from the Forces, he was employed for 15 years with the I.M.P. Group, as an Aviation Electronic Technician in the aerospace division retiring in 2001.

 

Merlin was a member of the Cherry Brook United Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated and committed member serving as a Deacon, President of the Brotherhood, a member of the Trustee Board and Cemetery Committee. In addition, he was a member of the Senior and Gospel Fellowship Choirs. He also served on the AUBA Laymen’s Council as Keyman and District #1 Organizer. His favorite Bible scripture verse was 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” He was also a member of the Lake Loon/Cherry Brook Seniors Club and the Halifax County Seniors Council - Zone #15.

 

Merlin had a deep love for his family. He enjoyed travelling, singing, writing poetry, playing the organ and accordion, darts, bowling and curling. One of his favorite pastimes was watching the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team.

 

Visitation and AUBA Layman Service will take place on Tuesday May 3, 2022, 7:00pm – 9:00pm at the Atlantic Funeral Home (771 Main St., Dartmouth). A Homegoing Service will be held on Thursday May 5, 2022, at 1:00 pm at the Cherry Brook United Baptist Church (292 Cherry Brook Rd.) with Rev. Wayne Desmond officiating. We are requesting that those attending wear a mask. Interment to follow in the Cherry Brook United Baptist Church Cemetery with a Repast at 4:00pm at the Atlantic Funeral Home.
