INGRAM, John Roger (Jack, J.R.) - With sadness we announce the passing of our father, John Roger (Jack, J.R.) Ingram in his 99th year on September 14, 2022, in Grimsby, Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Ella, his older sister Elizabeth (Hunter), his younger brothers, William and Robert; his wife for 43 years Sophie; and his wife for 25 years, Mable. He is survived by his youngest brother, Donald of Edmonton, Alberta; his son, Wayne (Leslie Ann) of Port Alberni, BC; and daughter, Sharilyn (Wayne Morgan) of Grimsby. Jack was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on July 7, 1924. As a child of 4, he moved with his family to Edmonton, where he attended school, sold newspapers, and played sports. He played hockey, baseball, and football for community, school (Victoria Composite), and the EAC (Edmonton Athletic Club) teams, frequently with his younger brother Bill. When WWII arrived Jack joined the Royal Canadian Navy, who put their young stoker/ShorePatrolman on Navy hockey and baseball clubs, both in Edmonton and then in RCN base Cornwallis in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Notable were a provincial junior hockey championship with HMCS Nonsuch in 1943 and in 1942 a storied victory with the Canadian All-Service baseball team over an American All-Service team that featured major and triple-A league players. After the war Jack and his wife Sophie returned to Alberta where he played for other championship hockey clubs, including the Wetaskiwin Colonels and the Edmonton Waterloo Mercurys. Family responsibilities led to "hanging up the skates" in 1950 and joining hardware and sporting goods wholesaler Marshall Wells, where he worked in sales for more than a dozen years, then moved to Acklands, then Westward Power, where he worked in sales and management. Golf replaced hockey, with equal enthusiasm if not always equal success - although he did shoot his age in his mid-70s and later scored a hole in one. Jack retired in 1986 in Edmonton, then after Sophie's death moved to Leduc (with winters in Yuma, Arizona, and Thousand Palms, California), then Calgary, and eventually Grimsby, Ontario. Special thanks to the staff of Maplecrest Village in Grimsby, who made his last years as comfortable as possible. Jack will be remembered for his out-going personality and his unfailing gallantry and kindness to others. His sense of humour mercifully outlived his memory faculties, and he was always a delight to be with. RIP, Dad. (The Globe and Mail 17 Sep 2022)
