BOWIE, E. Veronica - age 92, of Antigonish and formerly West River, passed away in the Veteran's Unit of St. Martha's Regional Hospital on January 31, 2015.
Born in Bailey's Brook, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Allan and Mary (Robertson) MacDonald.
Veronica grew up in Bailey's Brook and attended schools in Pictou County. She was a graduate of Provincial Normal College, Truro. She taught school for two years before joining the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service where she served in Newfoundland and British Columbia before being discharged in 1946.
In 1947 she married John D. Bowie, a military engineer, and they moved to West River, Antigonish County where they raised their family of ten boys and two girls. With the assistance of her husband and family Veronica was an active volunteer in the community, She was a fifty year member of Arras Branch #59 Royal Canadian Legion, serving on several committees including a term as Vice President. She served three years as President of the Ladies Auxiliary and held various other executive positions. She spent twenty-nine enjoyable years as a 4H Craft leader and knit and crocheted many articles for the Red Cross and other organizations. She was a volunteer librarian at MacPherson Elementary School, volunteer Guardian Angel for St. Martha's Hospital Nursery, Board Member of Braemore Co-op, wasClub 60 reporter for the Antigonish Casket, Treasurer of the Antigonish-Guysborough Senior Citizen's Council for several years and a committee member of Antigonish-Guysborough Senior's Expo. She was a member of St. Ninian Parish, serving as Eucharistic Minister for three years and was a long time member of St. Ninian CWL.
She is survived by two daughters: Mary (Philip) Connolly, Guysborough Intervale and Elaine (Kenny Mason), Lower West River; nine sons: William, Antigonish; Allan (Jean) Sussex Corner, N.B.; Douglas, Lower West River; Jim (Gail), Grande Prairie, AB; Gordon (Terri) Truro; John (Darlene), Alliston, Ont.; Mike (Ruth), Bedford; Albert (Dawn), Maugerville, N.B.; and Philip (Laurie), London, Ont.; sister, Pat (Don) MacLean, New Glasgow; brother in law, Raymond MacKinnon, New Glasgow and sister in law Agnes Bowie-MacDonald, New Glasgow; 23 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John D.; son, Anthony Daniel; brother, John Tie (Naomi) MacDonald; sisters: June (Don) Munroe and Isabel MacKinnon; sister in law, Jenny (Charlie) Chisholm; brother in law, John J. MacDonald.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and7 to 9 pm.
Funeral Mass will be in St. Ninian Cathedral on Thursday at 11:00 am. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.
