In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MACDONALD, Charles - Aged 85, passed away with his family by his side on January 8, 2016. Born in Sydney on Sept 30, 1930, he lived most of his life in Dartmouth. Charlie was son of the late Charles and Pheobe (Tutty) MacDonald. Charlie served over 30 years in the Royal Canadian Navy as an electrician, first from 1950-1970, fulfilling many deployments, and then returning in 1981 to the Auxiliary Fleet. In between he worked at the IWK Children's Hospital as the only electrician on staff. Charlie loved working around the children and met the love of his life, Norma, a nurse on staff. In 1990 upon "retiring", Charlie decided to continue his passion for learning by fulfilling his lifelong dream of getting a University degree. Over the next 16 years Charlie obtained his BA in Political Science, BA in Criminology and Sociology, Bachelor of Commerce and Certificate in Human Resource, all from Saint Mary's University. It took him so long because he took a year to care for his grandson Skyler. Bored with "retirement", Charlie returned to work as a Commissionaire on Fire Watch duty at HMC Dockyard until 2010. Charlie was a member of the Somme Branch Legion #31, as well as, a member of the White Ensign Masonic Lodge. Survived by wife Norma; children Kim (Sam) Nicolaou, the late Wade (Patricia), Leslie, Scott (Melissa); grandchildren Alexa (Michael), Adrienne, Amanda, Skyler, Natalie, Sara, Julie, Dakota; stepchildren Peter (Karen) Bruton, Heather Bruton; great grandson Louka; sister Anne Richardson and brother Robert (Bob). Charles is described by all who knew him as a good man, kind and generous. He will be missed by all. There will be no visitation. Memorial Service will be Friday, January 15, 2016 at 2pm at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to IWK Children's Hospital, War Amps or NS Alzheimer's Society. Family would like to thank the staff at Glasgow Hall for the wonderful care they gave Charlie over the last year.
