In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SAUNDERS, Everett Frederick (Fred) - It is with great sadness that Everett Frederick “Fred” Saunders cast off for heavenly deployment at 1450 hrs, July 28, 2022. The once proud destroyer was listing badly over the past few years… but always righted... until a rouge peacefully took the bow under... all hands.
Born in Charlottetown in 1930, he was a son of Everett and Edith Saunders (siblings Aletha, Irving, Allison), the ex-husband of Doris (Ings) and special friend of Caroline, all predeceased.
Dad joined the navy in 1951 and was most proud of his career and NATO deployments sailing numerous oceans and seas, docking in many ports, and usually returning with Royal Dalton figurines, Quality Street candies (a favourite), perhaps a few duty frees, and many tales of adventure.
He followed with a second enjoyable career at Oland Breweries.
Dad sure loved to sing and enjoyed entertaining everyone he met everywhere he went, be that in waiting rooms, doctor's offices, restaurants, shopping malls, the Legion, ...anywhere he was... from Drumheller Alberta to Halifax-Dartmouth. He had such a gift for storytelling and jokes with his incredible sense of humour.
Dad leaves ashore his son Ret/Cst Steven Saunders (Ret/S/Sgt Barb Saunders, Alberta), daughter Wendy Acott (Dr. Phil Acott, Halifax), and son Tim Saunders (Dartmouth) who was his best friend, piano player, and dedicated caregiver these past five years. Tim will miss the sunny waterfront journeys for their occasional Sunday brew with dad riding in his scooter and Tim on his bike.
Grampie was most proud of his children and long-awaited grandchildren, Cst Sean Saunders (Chelsea Saunders, Alberta), Cst Emma Saunders (Cst Cade Seeley, Alberta), Bryan Saunders (Dartmouth), newlywed Leigha Acott (Joel Langille, Halifax), Dr. Brad Acott (USA), and Julia Acott (Alberta).
This past June, at 91, Grampie travelled west to Alberta to see great grandcowgirls Hollis, Winnie, Layne and Harper. At home in Dartmouth, he was especially entertained by great-grandson sailor Jaxson who he loved to spoil with chocolate dips.
Freddy loved his time spent with his legion buddies, a table that grew smaller over time, and he apologizes to them for his wayward tongue. Fond wishes to Bob, Otto, Gerry, Shirley, Guy and the many others who made his day and took the time to call.
Cremation has taken place. A brief graveside service is scheduled for Thursday, August 4, 1100, at Woodlawn Church Cemetery with words of remembrance and a gathering of mates on Friday, August 5 at 1300 Centennial Branch Legion, 160 Main Street, Westphal-Dartmouth.
Everett/Fred/Freddy/Dad/Grampie/Gramps/Great Grampie is greatly loved and will be dearly missed. (A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home)
