VENIOT, Ralph Elden Sr. - 83, of Dartmouth, passed away at Dartmouth General Hospital following 7 years of illness.
Born in 1939 in Saint John, NB he was a son of the late Wm. Francis “Bill” Vienneau (Veniot) and Bernetta “Vickie” (Blanchard).
He married his long-time friend and childhood sweetheart Susan (nee Howell) 56 years ago.
Ralph grew up in St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Silver Falls, NB and attended Saint John Vocational School. He served 2 years in the Army and 33 years in the Navy (CAF). Ralph served on many ships: HMCS La Hulloise, Outremont, Athabaskan, Cap de la Madeleine, Chaleur, Terra Nova, Fraser, Protecteur, Assiniboine, Annapolis. He also served at CFB Cornwallis, Stadacona, Halifax, Shelburne and Mill Cove; and at AFU(A). He retired as a CPO2.
Ralph served as usher and on parish council at St. Annes, Lake Echo and as altar server at St. Annes and St. Anslems, West Chezzetcook. Ralph was a 3rd Degree Knight- Council 9093; a member of St. Genevieve’s (St. John of the Cross Parish), East Chezzetcook and then moved to Dartmouth in 2019 and attended St. Clements (Divine Mercy Parish) until his declining health in 2020.
Ralph was for a time “Baloo” in Lake Echo Cub Pack, a chartered member of the Lake Echo Lions Club; served as a Gaetz Brook School Trustee, and a member of Lake Echo Seniors.
Ralph enjoyed his sweets; pies and cookies, known as the ‘Cookie Monster”, thanks to his favourite bakers Christina and Jessie. He loved canoeing and swimming, especially swimming across Lake Echo racing who ever he could talk into it. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family especially for his sense of humour and mischievous grin.
Survived by his spouse, Susan; son R. Elden of Lake Echo and chosen brother Ronald W. Howell; sisters-in-law Joan (Ont.) and Annetta (BC); and 16 nieces and nephews, and 21 great nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by parents, siblings Wm. Francis in infancy, Mary Ward, Bill and Steve Veniot; nephews Joe and Mark Veniot.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial visitation will be held from 6-9 pm on Friday August 12th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Mass of Christian Burial to take place at 12:30 pm on Saturday August 13th in St. Genevieve’s, 723 East Chezzetcook Road, head of Chezzetcook, with celebrant Fr. Vincent Onyekelu. Family interment service at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens Donations maybe made for research of Dementia, Parkinsons, Heart & Stroke or Diabetes, all of which were close to Ralph.
Thank you to his weekly caregivers Tanya and Paulette for great service and care. And thank you to Emergency Department, 4 West , 5 West (Dartmouth General) and doctors, particularly Dr’s Vantol, Flemming and Lu-Olaco; nurses and staff for their exemplary care under great circumstance.
