Died: 16 Sep 2022, Pictou, Nova Scotia

 

HOLT, Earl Smith - of River John, passed away peacefully September 16, 2022 in the Northumberland Veteran’s Unit, Pictou. Born in River John, he was a son of the late Smith and Mary Elizabeth (Langille) Holt. A Veteran of the Second World War, Earl served overseas with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve from 1943-1945 as an able bodied seaman gunner. He joined the Truro Town Police from 1953-1964. He worked for Corrections Canada as a Probation Officer from 1964 until he retired in 1986. Earl was appointed to Royal Canadian Mounted Police Complaints Commission from 1989-1994. He was an avid hobby farmer and fisherman with his best friend of over 50 years, Bob. Earl was a member of St. George’s Presbyterian Church, River John, the Independent Order Odd Fellows for 70 years, Helping Hand Lodge River John, Past Noble Grand, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 108 River John Past President and Admiral Murray Naval Association. He is survived by his loving son, Kenneth (Carol) Holt, Westville, NS; chosen children, Ian Smith, Brandon, MB; David Smith, Durham, NS; Angela (Smith) Mullins, Tignish Crossings, NS; his beloved grandchildren, Kerry Dykeman (Stephen), Thorburn, NS; Eric Holt, Westville, NS; great-grandchildren, Owan, Felisity and Kaylie MacLeod. Earl was predeceased by his loving wives, Marion (Mingo) Holt, Ann (Waters) Holt; brother, Fred G. Holt; sisters, Kathleen Munroe and Mysie MacPhee. Visitation will be held Thursday from 1-3 PM at St. George’s Presbyterian Church, River John. Funeral will follow at 3 PM with Rev. Enjei Achah officiating. Donations in Earl’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stoke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice. (McLaren Funeral Service)
