In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MacKILLOP, Donnie Alexander - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donnie Alexander MacKillop, 86 on September 14, 2022 in Halifax after a brief illness. Donnie was a big man with a big heart and a passion for life.
Born on November 8, 1935, he was the beloved son of the late John and Hilda MacKillop.
Donnie began work at the early age of 16 driving a milk truck through the streets of Glace Bay. In addition to his regular duties, Donnie was also known to pick up the occasional wayward passenger in need of a drive.
Donnie eventually transitioned into a career in the military. He proudly served his country with postings at various bases across Canada. He retired as Master Warrant Officer after 29 years of service. However, Donnie was not prepared to slow down. After a two-day retirement, he traded in his military uniform for a suit and tie began working for the Department of National Defence in a civilian role.
In addition to his professional career and his loving family, he felt his greatest personal achievement was his 32 years of sobriety.
Donnie was larger than life, with a passion for family, baking fresh bread and watching the Pittsburgh Penguins and his favourite player Sidney Crosby.
If you were invited to Donnie and Donna's home for a meal you would be rewarded with Donnie's fresh buns! You would also have to agree that Donnie's hockey hero, Sid the Kid, was the best player of all time.
"Poppy" loved his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was proud of them all, and held a particularly special bond with Stanton and Alex. "Poppy" would love to take them fishing, or cheer them on at their basketball and hockey games.
Donnie is survived by his wife and best friend Donna Hogan, together they found love later in life and made a happy home. He leaves behind his siblings, George, Gordie, Willie, Marilyn and Uncle Angus MacKillop. He was deeply proud of his loving daughters Cheryl (Vernon Nelson), Donna Smith, Marlene (Doug Oxner), Tina (Tony Robichaud), and Lisa (Wes Pickard) as well as his late wife Ann's three children, Lynn, Patti, John and Donna's two special daughters, Tara and Tracey.
Donnie was predeceased by his daughter Kelly Lynn, sister Karen, brother-in-law Leo Simmons, brother Roddie, sister-in-law Lorraine, mother of his daughters, Wilena MacKillop, and his late wife Ann MacKillop.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the entire medical team at the Halifax Infirmary, particularly the compassion from the doctors and nurses on floor 8.2
The family would also like to extend deep thanks for the love, friendship and last meal from Johnny's Snack Bar. Donnie and Donna were regulars there and could often be found enjoyinga meal there together.
"Forgetting anyone as intriguing as Donnie would be an exercise in futility". He will be missed deeply, by all who knew and loved him.
