In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
KOVITS, William Charles (Bill) - After a long battle with lung cancer, he leaves behind Shirley, his loving wife, best friend and companion of 59 years, and brothers Herman and Fred. Predeceased by his brother Norman. Born in Lashburn, Saskatchewan, he was brought up in Prince George, BC. In 1951, at the age of 17, he signed up at HMCS CHATHAM in Prince Rupert, thus beginning his 25 year career in the Royal Canadian Navy. Serving as a stoker and diver, Bill served in Korea in HMCS ATHABASKAN. After retiring from the navy in 1976, he joined the BC Sheriff Service. Bill was a founding member of the Victoria Judo Club. As a life-long member, he helped to mould the club into one of BC's most successful clubs. His 6'4" presence, handlebar moustache, ship on his chest and unique style of instruction will remain in the memories of all who were lucky enough to have met him on the mats. He attained the rank of 6th degree black belt, a rarely-achieved senior rank. Thank you to Eric Cherneff and Mickey Fitzgerald for their support during this trying time. "30 knots and no smoke!" At Bill's request, there will be no service. Donations in his memory may be made to the BCSPCA. "30 knots and no smoke!" (The Victoria Times Colonist 10 Oct 2015)
