SMITH, Richard Alfred, Sto 1c, V27489, RCNVR, MPK - 04 Oct 1944, HMCS CHEBOGUE - Son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Smith, of Toronto, Ontario; husband of Bernice Smith. of Toronto.
Stoker 1st Class Richard Alfred Smith, 39, only child of Mrs. Janet McKinnon of 14 Hope St., and the late Alfred Smith of Halifax, Yorkshire, is reported killed as a result of enemy action. In a casualty list issued by the Navy at Ottawa yesterday, Stoker Smith enlisted in the R.C.N.V.R. in October, 1941, and went to sea for the first time the following spring. Before he enlisted in the navy he had 13 years in the Non-Permanent Militia, being a member of several regiments. Stoker Smith was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, and went to school there, coming to Canada at the age of 15 with his mother. His wife, the former Bernice Witty of Montréal, lives at 5 Ashbury Ave., with their two children, Irene, 11, and Richard, 9.
