BYRNE, John Eugene, AB AA3, V49186, RCNVR, MPK - 14 Feb 1945, 29th MTB FLOTILLA - Son of Owen and Mary Byrne, of Toronto, Ontario. Husband of Monica Dorothy Byrne, of Toronto.
Able Seaman J. E. Byrne was killed in an accidental explosion on a motor torpedo boat in Belgium, his body was not recovered.
Able Seaman, Jack Eugene Byrne, 22 R.C.N.V.R., has been missing and presumed dead since Feb. 14, after an accidental explosion in Belgium, according to word received by his wife, the former Monica Irish, 768 Markham St. Born in Toronto, Able Seaman Byrne was educated at St. Mary's and Corpus Christi separate schools and De La Salle Collegiate. Enlisting in the navy in October, 1942, Able Seaman, Byrne was stationed at HMCS York and also at Esquimalt and Sydney, N.S., before going overseas in November, 1943. He was aboard a motor torpedo boat for a short time, and was then stationed in England. In January Able Seaman, Byrne was awarded a medal for gallantry, but further details are not yet known by his wife. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Byrne of Toronto.
