CRAIG, Gordon Robert, O/Tel, 3704, RCN, MPK - 01 May 1941, S.S. NERISSA (Troopship) - Son of Violet Carter Craig, of Victoria, British Columbia.
Ordinary Telegraphist Gordon Robert Craig died on the NERISSA which was a chartered troop ship that was torpedoed by U552 off the coast of Ireland on a voyage from Halifax to Liverpool with a loss of 207 lives. He was the son of Violet Craig (remarried as Mrs. Carter). Gordon was born at Moose Jaw, on March 11, 1923. He was educated at the Technical School at Vancouver and Victoria Boys' Central School, and the Central Victoria High School. He was barely 17 when he enlisted into the RCN at Esquimalt British Columbia, on May 06, 1940 as a seaman boy. He was well known locally in sports, winning cups for boxing and certificates in swimming contests. He was unmarried and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Violet Carter, of 567 Walter St., Victoria, British Columbia.
