In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
STEED, Arnold Lyall - Passed away at the Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie, on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, in his 100th year. Arnold was born in Windsor on the 29th of June, 1923. He was predeceased by his wife Beverly after 65 years of marriage and his daughter Nancy Nuttall. Survived by his daughter Barbara Cyr, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Eloise. He was predeceased by his brothers Ray, Jim, Bill, and sister Helen. Arnold joined the Royal Canadian Navy in July 1941 and served in Esquimalt and Halifax overseas in the United Kingdom and on the Cruiser "Uganda" in the South Pacific during World War II. Arnold continued his service in the Navy, retiring after 32 years in 1973 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He then joined the Unemployment Commission in St. Catharines and served for a further 15 years retiring in 1988 as the Manager of the Canada Employment Centre in Niagara Falls. After retiring, Arnold became a volunteer at the newly opened Rose City Seniors Centre in Welland and also served on the Advisory Committee, chairing the committee for two terms. During his second term the Rose City Seniors Foundation was created with Arnold as the founding Chairman. During this period, he presented two petitions to the City of Welland Council, proposing an expansion of the center to accommodate the growing membership. The council agreed with the proposal but was not in a position to finance the expansion at the time but did agree to create a reserve fund that could be used when finances permitted. During the period of stimulus in 2009 Arnold served on a committee to expand using federal and provincial stimulus grants. The three levels of government approved a $9-million grant to double the size of the complex, with the proviso that the new complex be designated a Welland Wellness Complex with membership open to all age groups. The old center was closed for a year while the new complex was completed. Arnold was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his volunteerism. Arnold continued to volunteer as a Member of the Welland Council Seniors Advisory Committee and Welland Community Wellness Complex. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Fonthill, a member of Merritt Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, a 33 degree member of Scottish Rites Masons, and a member of the former Cook's Mills United Church. Following Arnold's wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main St., on Friday, November 25th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. where a Masonic Service will be held at 11 a.m. (The St. Catharines Standard 22 Nov 2022)
