In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CAREW, Thomas Joseph (Tom) - age 59 years, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly, surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after a courageous battle with cancer.
Tom was born on February 12, 1963 in Happy Valley, Goose Bay, Labrador to Rose and Jack Carew and moved to Sudbury, Ontario for his schooling. He later joined the Royal Canadian Navy, travelling the world for four years. He then moved to St. John's, Newfoundland where he began an electrician journeyman apprenticeship. He worked on tower cranes in both Halifax and Toronto for a number of years before making his final move to Thunder Bay where he joined Ontario Hydro/Hydro One as a powerline maintainer (lineman). Throughout his 31-year hydro career, he also worked in electrical maintenance, as an instructor and as a drone operator. He was passionate about his work.
He loved his role as a father and grandfather. He enjoyed all sports and was most passionate about hockey, golf, downhill skiing and squash. Tom had a strong work ethic and was always willing to lend a hand to friends and family. He volunteered his time throughout the years at various golf (Canadian Open) and hockey tournaments, as well as fundraisers. He made all events he attended fun and memorable. His fantastic sense of humour and quick wit made him the life of any party. He enjoyed travelling and was fortunate to see many parts of the world.
Tom leaves behind his partner of 27 years Christine Lushney and loving daughters, Samantha Turner (Dom), Sabrina Carew (Ben) and their mother Donna Martin. He is predeceased by his parents Jack and Rose Carew and his sister Jackie Drouin. Tom was blessed to be a huge part of his grandchild's life; she brought him so much joy, Aubree Turner. Also left with loving memories are his sisters Terri (Ron), Barb (Andy), brother Frankie (Annie), brother-in-law Gilbert, nieces Sophia and Caitlin, nephew Jordae, and life-long best friend Ed Lynds.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, and in Tom's spirit of generosity, complete an unexpected, unsolicited act of kindness for someone in his name. (The Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal 03 Dec 2022)
