CARSON, Morley Willerton, O/Sig, V11312, RCNVR, MPK - 05 Nov 1940, HMS JERVIS BAY - Son of Mrs. Bertie Carson, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Signalman Morley Willerton Carson was the son of Mrs. Bertie Carson. Morley was born at Wilkie, Saskatchewan and was a student at City Park collegiate when he enlisted on October 20, 1938 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The Jervis Bay was a passenger liner built in 1922, taken over by the Admiralty in 1939, converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser and assigned to convoy duty on the Atlantic. She was the only escort for convoy HX84 from Halifax to Glasgow when they unluckily encountered the pocket battleship Admiral Scheer. Captain Fegen of the Jervis Bay decided to advance to meet the raider, in the hope of delaying the Germans long enough to enable most of the convoy to escape. Hopelessly outgunned, they never got close enough to land a shot but managed to delay the Admiral Scheer for a critical half an hour. From the crew of 255 just 64 were rescued.
