KEEPING, Herbert George - Lunenburg Man Drowns While Hunting - Herbert George Keeping was drowned New Year's Day while duck hunting in Bayport Harbour, several miles from Lunenburg, after his home-made gun-tub sank. He and two companions, his uncle Gordon Nodding Jr and Captain James Sheaves, both of Lunenburg, were ashore when the accident occurred. An inquest at Riverport, Lunenburg County, on Saturday night, returned a verdict of accidental drowning. The accident happened some time before noon, and the body was recovered in the afternoon following dragging operations. The late George Keeping, a 51 year old employee of the Lunenburg Sea Products, was born in Fortune Bay, Newfoundland, and served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. He was a member of Lunenburg Branch #23 Canadian Legion. He is survived by his wife, the former Annie Whynacht of Lunenburg, and a 13 year old daughter Sandra Ann. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from Sweeny's Funeral Home, conducted by Rev Alexander Allen, pastor of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Member of the local branch of the Canadian Legion attended in a body and conducted their service at the graveside.
