MacDONALD, Alexander, Sto 2c, V19077, RCNVR, MPK - 05 Nov 1940, HMS JERVIS BAY - Son of Angus and Stella MacDonald, of Windsor, Ontario.

 

Stoker Alexander MacDonald, stoker, V19077, RCNVR, age 21, was from Windsor, Ontario. His father Angus MacDonald, who was a bagpiper, was originally from Inverness County, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. On his first trip with the naval vessel, Stoker Alexander MacDonald is one of the 13 listed as missing in the sinking of HMS JERVIS BAY, a British Armed Merchant Cruiser, in a battle with a German raider. The young MacDonald joined the navy last July and was stationed for some time at the Windsor Division of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve station on Howard Avenue. He was transferred to Halifax Five or six weeks before he went on HMS JERVIS BAY. It was his first experience of actual combat service. He was born in England, coming to Canada with his parents at the age of eight months. When he was six years old, he was brought to Windsor, Ontario. Here, he attended St. Francis Separate School and Assumption College High School. He was also well known as a caddy at the Essex golf course. Before joining the navy, he was employed at L. A. Young Industries of Canada, Limited. Member of his immediate family include his mother and father; two brother, Christopher and Jimmy and two sisters, Catherine and Adelaide.
