TAYLOR, Harold Joseph (Scotty), AB, V5489, RCNVR, MPK - 05 Nov 1940, HMS JERVIS BAY - Son of Emma Taylor, of Montreal, Province of Quebec.
Able Seaman Harold J. (Scotty) Taylor, word was received here from Ottawa today that Able Seaman H. J. Taylor, R.C.N.V.R., is reported missing and believed killed in the loss of the British Armed Merchant Cruiser Jervis Bay. Taylor is a Montréal boy. Taylor's next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs. Emma Taylor, of 2002 Laurier avenue east, Montréal. Mrs. Taylor, who is suffering from a heart ailment, was not told that her son was lost lest the shock should be too great. Members of the family still hold hope that word may yet come that he is alive after all. A prominent athlete before the outbreak of war, "Scotty" Taylor was well known here. Besides being an expert baseball player he played on St. Domenic's hockey team and boxed under the colors of the C.P.R. Athletic Club. Taylor was 21 years old and had been in the service since September, 1939. His brother, Robert Taylor, is with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Montréal. H.M.S. Jervis Bay was sunk by a Nazi raider on November 05, but before she sank she held off the enemy warship long enough for all but six of the 38 ships that she was convoying to escape. A.B. Taylor worked in the delivery department of the Montréal Star from May, 1936, to February, 1937. He was unmarried and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Emma Taylor of Montréal, Québec.
