In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
STEVENS, Warren D. - 94, Veterans Unit, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, formerly of Port Medway, Queens Co., died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in the Veterans Unit. Born on Tancook Island, he was a son of the late Ernest A. and Laura (Rhodenizer) Stevens. For most of his life, he was a sailor. In the 1920's, he sailed on the Tancook schooner, the "Jahala", over the Viking trail, a 5000 mile trip from Second Peninsula to Greenland with David Binney Putnam. He also sailed on various yachts. He joined the Navy in 1940, and during the Second World War, he sailed on the "Jarvis Bay" and while guarding a convoy of supplies destined for Great Britain, the ship was shelled and sunk by the German battleship, the "Admiral Scheer". He survived nine hours in the North Atlantic on a hatch cover. Following the war, he sailed with Mersey Shipping Company on the "Vinland". He was a diesel operator for Nova Scotia Power Corporation. He was also a self-employed fisherman for a number of years. He served as deputy chief and chief of Port Medway Fire Department. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Geraldine (Sherman) Williams, Brooklyn; Barbara (Ronald) Burns, Mill Village; Marjorie Wamboldt, Port Medway; Shirley (Willard) Weagle, Middlewood; sons, Larry (Grace), William (Judy) and Gerald (Virginia), all of Port Medway; Warren J., Mill Village; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Inez P. Stevens; son, Daniel; sisters, Marina, Eva and Lenora; brothers, Melville and two in infancy. Visitation will be Saturday, March 24, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service will be Sunday, March 25, at 2 p.m. in Highway Pentecostal Assembly, Brooklyn, Pastor Gary Leavitt officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Port Medway. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Highway Pentecostal Assembly or the Veterans Unit of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.
