They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
UNGER, Abraham, AB, V39733, RCNVR, died - 25 Oct 1944, HMCS SKEENA - Son of Jacob J. and Judith Unger, of McMahon, Saskatchewan.
AB Unger was the son of Jacob J. and Judith (Dyck) Unger who came from Neuenberg, Manitoba, to homestead east of Wymark. Abe and his siblings attended Hopefield school and he was farming when he enlisted on June 10, 1942 at Regina, Saskatchewan. Six of the 11 Unger children served in the forces despite their Mennonite faith: Jacob, Cornelius and George in the R.C.A.F., Herman in the Armoured Corps and Abraham and Frank in the Navy.
AB Unger drowned while trying to get a safety line ashore so that the remaining crew could be safely removed from SKEENA. His body later recovered near Reykjavik Harbour. He is buried in the Fossvogur Cemetery, Reykjavik, Iceland.
