WHITE, Robert Borden, Sto 1c, V30305, RCNVR, MPK - 19 Sep 1941, HMCS LEVIS - Son of Harry and Ada Emily White, of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan; husband of Vera Edna White, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Stoker Robert Borden White of Trail, British Columbia, was the son of Harry and Ada Emily (Beeston) White who came from England to homestead southwest of Maple Creek. Robert was educated there and at Balfour Technical School, Regina, Saskatchewan. He worked for four years in the smelter at Trail British Columbia by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company and came to Vancouver in August 1940, when he enlisted on August 23, 1940 at Esquimalt, British Columbia and was married January 1941 to Vera Edna (Broman) at Vancouver (later Mrs. Tibke of Seattle). Robert's brother Frank was wounded in Normandy serving with the South Saskatchewan Regiment. He was a member of the crew of H.M.C.S. Levis, a Canadian Corvette, which was lost by enemy action and was one of the seventeen Canadian members of the crew who were lost. The Levis did not sink immediately after the action and gallant effort was made by another Canadian corvette to tow her to the nearest port, but this attempt proved unsuccessful and the Levis, after being towed for several hours sank.
