They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
ARKELL, Joseph William, AB, V/14972, RCNVR, MPK - 08 Aug 1944, HMCS REGINA - Son of Dorothy Arkell, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
AB Arkell died when HMCS REGINA was torpedoed and sunk off Trevose Head, Cornwall, England by U-667 while she was aiding a merchant vessel in distress. Thirty of her crew were lost.
Able Seaman Joseph William Arkell age 26, was born in Vancouver and attended Vancouver Technical School. Before enlisting in 1941 he worked at the UBC cheese factory. HMCS REGINA was the only ship he had served in. He is survived by two sisters. Mrs. Dorren Dunlop and Miss Barbara Arkell, and a brother, Terry Arkell, steward in the CPSS Coastal Service, lives at home.
