MCCARRON, Francis Joseph, AB Radar III, V64574, RCNVR, MPK - 08 Aug 1944, HMCS REGINA - Son of Owen and Alice McCarron, of Toronto, Ontario.
Francis McCarron, who was born in Detroit in 1924 and moved back to Toronto with his family when he was only a year old, was younger than his senior classmate Bill Morley and attended Malvern from 1938-1940. He and his parents, Owen and Alice McCarron, lived with his brothers Reynold and Jack at 56 Glen Manor Dr. His sisters Norma Tease and Emelyn Pike were already married with homes of their own in Toronto. McCarron worked as a clerk for Dominion Stores Ltd. and after volunteering for the Navy in June 1943, he trained at naval stations HMCS MONTCALM in Québec City, HMCS CORNWALLIS in Nova Scotia, and HMCS STADACONA before joining the crew of HMCS REGINA on Feb. 23, 1944.
AB McCarron died when HMCS REGINA was torpedoed and sunk off Trevose Head, Cornwall, England by U-667 while she was aiding a merchant vessel in distress. Thirty of her crew were lost.
