COOK, John Frederick, Lt, RCNVR, MPK - 07 Sep 1942, HMCS RACCOON - Son of Charles James Cook and Mabel G. Cook, of Westmount, Quebec.

Lt Cook died when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, which was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula, was hit and sunk by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost.

Lt John Cook, 26, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. A. Cook of 2 Grenville Ave., Westmount. He was educated at Roslyn and Westmount High Schools and at Sir George Williams College before taking a special course with the International Accountants Society of the United States. Employed for a time with the firm Hyde & Davis, chartered accountants, Lieut. Cook entered the employ of Cook & Leach, building contractors, in which his father is one of the partners. He enlisted in the R.C.N.V.R. early in 1940 and proceeded to the east coast training college on January 15, 1941. Commissioned as a sub lieutenant the following April he was posted to active service and last March received his promotion to the rank of full Lieutenant. Lieut. Cook left a sister Dorothy and a brother, Charles both residing at home.
