They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
DUNCAN, William, OS LR3, V27362, RCNVR, MPK - 07 Sep 1942, HMCS RACCOON - Son of David Hutt Duncan, and of Janet Duncan, of Toronto, Ontario.
OS Duncan died when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, which was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula, was hit and sunk by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost. Prior to joining the Navy William worked for the Good Tire & Rubber Band Building.
Ordinary seaman William Duncan, age 25, son of Mrs. G. Duncan, of Westmoreland Ave., William worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. before he enlisted in July, 1941. "We received a letter last Wednesday and he said he was quite fit and well," Mrs. Duncan said. "He was home on furlough last March." Born in Scotland, he came to Canada at the age of 10 and finished his education at Bloor collegiate. A crack tennis player, he won the men's singles championship at Dovercourt Park some four years ago. He has two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Moore (Jeanette) and Isabel.
